Germany—Merkel not to seek fifth term as Chancellor
German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, will step down in December as the head of the ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party following large losses in the recent state election. Alternative fur Deutschland, the far-right anti-immigration party, won 10% of the vote in the recent Bavarian state elections—despite having no prior seats in the Bavarian state parliament.
Angela Merkel will also not seek a fifth term as chancellor at the 2021 elections. The new head of the CDU will be decided in early December.
Merkel’s decision is significant given her prominent leadership role in Europe and globally. Across Europe, the general trend is away from established political parties. This is creating uncertainty about policy direction. Despite any uncertainty, Germany will remain a strong economy in Europe and globally.
